Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from a doctor in order to receive physiotherapy or psychotherapy assessment or treatment?

Anyone can access physiotherapy or psychotherapy services directly, and no referral is necessary from a doctor. Although, some insurance companies may require a referral from a doctor in order to receive reimbursement for these services. It is best to check with your insurance company.

What will happen the first appointment?

During the first appointment, a complete assessment will be performed to get an overall picture your condition. A goal analysis will be completed to determine the areas of focus. From this, a plan will be created and put into effect for your individual needs.

How many sessions are required?

This will be discussed after the initial assessment. The number of sessions is dependent on individual factors such as: initial state, speed of progression and personal goals.

Is Physiotherapy or Psychotherapy covered by OHIP or Extended Health Coverage?

Physiotherapy and Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP. However, it is often covered (fully or partially) by extended health benefit plans. Check with your insurance company about your coverage. Although no referral is required for physiotherapy/psychotherapy treatment, check your insurance for their rules on the need to see a physician.
